NEW: Free Online IPM Training for Greenhouse Staff

Need a refresher on specific pests of floriculture, and what to do about them? Want to see how Canada – a world leader in biological control in ornamental crops – does things?

Then the following IPM training videos, made by specialists and consultants in Ontario, are for you!

Keep reading to learn how to access these videos, and the topics they cover.

Who It’s By:

Your hosts for the video workshop.

This video workshop was run by Dr. Sarah Jandricic, the Greenhouse Floriculture IPM Specialist for Ontario, and Mike Short, Director of Eco-Habitat AgriServices, an IPM consulting company in Southern Ontario.

Sarah has over 18 years of IPM research and consulting experience, with her work taking her down the east coast from Ontario, to New York state, to North Carolina and back. She currently works for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) providing up-to-date IPM research and information to floriculture growers.

Mike Short has been in the greenhouse and nursery consulting business for over 20 years, and is a common sight in many of the large greenhouse facilities here in Ontario. His unique “boots on the ground” insights and keen eye for new issues makes him an indispensible resource in the region.

Who It’s For:

These training videos (taken from an day-long workshop run in Ontario, Canada) are mainly aimed at beginner and novice growers and IPM practitioners working in greenhouse floriculture. The videos will walk you through:

Growers at all levels of experience will get something out of these educational videos.
  • The most commonly employed IPM techniques, like sanitation, mass trapping and cultural controls
  • Identifying common (and not so common!) insect pests in floriculture crops
  • The ABC’s of Biocontrol, including common natural enemies for each pest, release strategies, and more
  • Successful IPM programs used in Canadian greenhouses for major crops such as chrysanthemums and poinsettia

However, we also provide tips, tricks, tools and resources based on our combined 50+ years of experience in IPM in greenhouse floriculture, so this workshop can also be useful for expert-level IPM practitioners and employees who want to brush up on their knowledge.

This video series is also a key resource for anyone who wants to know more about the biocontrol-based IPM programs used in Ontario, Canada.

As the whole 6 hour workshop can be a lot to digest in one chunk, we’ve divided the recording into 9 bite-sized pieces, based on topic. These range from the basics, to scouting and management of specific pests, and where trouble spots can occur.

Dr. Jandricic goes over IPM basics and discusses where they fit into successful floriculture IPM programs.

Click on the links below to be taken to each topic. We suggest you watch them in the order given, as some presentations set the groundwork for others further down the list.

With the exception of the Introduction video, each video covering a pest or IPM issue is around 30-40 minutes long. For questions on any of the content in these videos, feel free to email the appropriate host. You can contact Dr. Sarah Jandricic at sarah.jandricic@ontario.ca or Mike Short at ecohabitatbio@gmail.com

Special thanks to OMAFRA Summer Student David Griffin for editing the workshop into bite-sized videos!
